3 out of 5 stars Great product but customer support is poor   August 22, 2010

Below is my personal experience with NEC and their support

I've got a 6 month old NEC EA231 WMI monitor of which the multi control switch has failed working properly (up position seldom works)

NEC Display support offered me a replacement (with a refurbished unit told to be up to specs) under warranty, assuming I am supposed to pay shipping of the defective unit to NEC. So far so good.

The replacement unit has arrived timely, well packed but to my surprise the unit has a solid 1" darker spot toward the middle of the screen and also a dead pixel in the same area!

pics here: [...]

Contacting NEC support again, they are advising me that a dead pixel is within the normal specs (nothing new here, just annoying) and that the dark spot is also within the specs!! Are you (NEC) guys kidding me that you can live with a dark spot on the middle of your display, and that is considered within specs? Probable for a 50% blind person it will not make a difference.

Finally after additional discussions with managers overs the phone with they agree to send me a second replacement but I will have to pay back shipping charges for this unit as well as for the 1st one, because that is their warranty policy and the spot and dead pixel are falling within the specs while NEC is actually doing a favor for me.

For me as a paying customer, they are asking me to pay close to $100 in shipping charges to fix one defect on one $340 display being under warranty, saying that their policy does not allow to pay for return shipping because the spot and dead pixel falls within the specs.

One less customer to NEC for about $50 (the amount I have to pay to ship back a defective replacement display of which NEC does consider working within specs)

5 out of 5 stars Excellent value for the money   July 12, 2010

Sure, this monitor could be bigger and there are cheaper alternatives - but you'd be hard pressed to find one where your money is as well spent as on this one. First, it's an IPS monitor with excellent color and picture quality out of the box. Mine came in pristine condition, the original packaging box is sturdy and had no dead pixels on arrival. I did calibrate it with a Colormunki colorimeter, but if you are used to calibrate your monitor by eye it won't be hard to adjust either. Color display on mine looks uniform - no noticeable shifts.

Pros? It comes with a sturdy base that gives it rock-solid stability and that also helps conceal the cables coming from the monitor. (You can also turn it on its base and use it vertically). Frame design is minimal and sober. Two extra USB ports on the right side come in handy if you are running out of them in your laptop, or if they are too out of reach. It also features a pair of concealed stereo speakers but I can't comment on these as I don't use them and I don't do games on the computer. I am using it with a 15" MacBook Pro, having it connected through the DVI to mini Display Port adapter (not included; available at any Apple store). Works flawlessly and the benefit of an all-digital video connection cannot be understated.

When you are not doing color-critical work, the Eco Modes 1 & 2 -which you can turn on/off at any time- are easier on the eyes and, according to NEC, on the environment too. Price of this item has gone down $50 since I purchased it, so right now it's even more of a great deal.

5 out of 5 stars If only it were much bigger   May 26, 2010

Getting spoiled. This, by far, is the best monitor i've ever had, and I've had it 6 months. Flawless, no dead pixels, and the so-called color casts from side to side are so slight I'm not sure I can really see what has been described. I use it for proofing dig and scanned MF fotos, CS4, developing modellos for my paintings. But I am not the most highly trained color professional, and they may need a much more expensive monitor. If you are even a little into colormanagement, then some level of calibration seems prudent. I calibrated mine with XRite Display2, very easy, but wish I would have got the more expensive spectrophotometer to do the same for the printer, projector). Depending on which color gamut you are using, even that might not be necessary, because the full-res Native mode it came with needed no adjustment for most of my work. The colors are truly natural, especially for this price, even in VGA.

Gripes? Not really. The stand is fantastically stable, and swiveling for Portrait mode is very easy if no USB's are dangling. What I haven't found is a single Win7 64 hotkey-toggle of Portrait/Landscape. Write me if you know a free one please. The gamma adjustment of 2.2, either through the Win7 utilities or the more detailed/precise DigitalDog utility you can google, does not exactly match the XRite results, close but not exact. Can't explain, but also can't tell the difference for so sl a difference; again I'm not a color professional. Displayport is no help to me, and the 2 USB ports over on the left side are rather useless -WWTT?. The speakers, well, you'd need to double the price to get decent sound from a monitor, so go components. Even my Altec-Lansing equipped laptop sounds better. But it wasn't bought for the sound. Agree that the controls are not very intuitive, have to go to the web for help. Nice non-glare screen and black finish, a very substantial feel. Only very sl warm on top after hours of work, should make it last longer. Ecomode may be a plus for many.
Bottom line this unit is very restful on the eyes, since the angle of view is so wide with the IPS design. Just wish it were more 6x5 or 4x3 proportioned but for CS4 Lightroom and ViewNX the wide format is better. For those doing WP who like two 8.5 x 11 sheets up full size side by side, with plenty of sidebar space, this width is perfect. I doubt going to the 24 in is worth the money but the 26in might be. 30 in would be nice, but too expensive at present. This is a nice unit. Highly recommended for most photographers/artists.

5 out of 5 stars What I Wanted   May 13, 2010

I was looking for an IPS monitor to use when editing photos and video. I originally considered a wide-gamut monitor but was unable to find any that didn't seem to have color issues. Most wide-gamut monitors in my price range had repeated reviews where users had to return the monitor because of color imbalance, banding, or tinting. I stumbled upon this monitor at amazon and the reviews were favorable. There wasn't a whole lot of information or reviews available as a whole because the monitor was so new. I ordered it knowing that amazon's favorable return policy would be used if the monitor was below par. So far I am happy. Obviously the 23-inch size makes it a little smaller than the 24-inch monitors offered by the other manufacturers. It seems to be built well and I've had no issues. I calibrated it with a Spyder 3 Express. For what it's worth, I calibrated three different monitors: my MB Pro, an older Samsung, and the NEC. The Samsung needed the largest correction. The MB Pro had a pretty significant correction as well. The NEC was the best of the three right out of the box. In fact, the before and after photos were not drastically different (as the other two monitors were). So, even if you do not calibrate the monitor, it shouldn't be too far off right out of the box. The only cable that is not included is the newer display port used on the new macbooks. Everything else was included. This monitor fills the needs I had, which was non-professional photo and video editing. Eventually I would like to pick up a wide-gamut monitor but I am waiting until the kinks are worked out of the affordable versions before I buy.

5 out of 5 stars Great monitor that supports Display Port   May 9, 2010

I got this monitor because it was one of the few monitors that actually supports Display Port.
The choice I had was to either by a $100 cable to convert the Display port to DVI or spend the $100 on the monitor. This was actually was the better deal.
Great monitor.
